Charlie founded his engineering business in 1989 from his then home in Anlaby with just two employees and has built it into a leading specialist across a wide range of industry sectors, with turnover in excess of £100 million and projects across the UK and abroad.

With headquarters at the prestigious One Humber Quays office block in Hull and offices in London and Glasgow, Spencer Group now employs more than 500 people nationally.

Spencer Group has an outstanding track record of creating engineering solutions across the energy, rail, bridge, marine and highways sectors, from initial design concepts through to construction, and specialises in logistically complex schemes. The company has substantial renewable energy activities and exceptional green credentials. It was named Humber Renewables Large Business of the Year in the Humber Renewables Awards 2013.

Spencer Group is developing Energy Works, a £150m environment-friendly power plant in Hull. It will be the first facility of its kind in the UK, using a combination of innovative renewable energy technologies that produce the most favourable results in terms of recycling and air quality. The project has been awarded a grant of almost £20 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

A passionate believer in entrepreneurship, Charlie’s company has funded programmes by the Hull youth development charity CatZero to inspire young people to set up their own businesses and is a leading supporter of Global Entrepreneurship Week in Hull.

Charlie is also a supporter of the Living Wage campaign which supports the adoption by companies of basic rates of pay significantly higher than the Minimum Wage. In 2013 Spencer Group became the first engineering business in the UK to become an accredited Living Wage employer.

A member of the City Leadership Board which is driving forward the ambitious City Plan to transform Hull’s economic fortunes, Charlie has a particular interest and involvement in projects aimed at making Hull the UK’s leading green city.
