Charlie Spencer

The Spencer Group

Charlie founded his engineering business in 1989 from his then home in Anlaby with just two employees and has built it into a leading specialist across a wide range of industry sectors, with turnover in excess of £100 million and projects across the UK.

Spencer Group has an outstanding track record of creating engineering solutions across the energy, rail, bridge, marine and highways sectors, from initial design concepts through to construction, and specialises in logistically complex schemes. The company has substantial renewable energy activities and exceptional green credentials.

Spencer Group was the developer behind Energy Works, a £200m environment-friendly power plant in Hull. It will be the first facility of its kind in the UK, using a combination of innovative renewable energy technologies that produce the most favourable results in terms of recycling and air quality. This is due to be complete and fully operational in 2020. The project has been awarded a grant of almost £20 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

Charlie is also a supporter of the Living Wage campaign which supports the adoption by companies of basic rates of pay significantly higher than the Minimum Wage. In 2013 Spencer Group became the first engineering business in the UK to become an accredited Living Wage employer.

In 2015, Charlie was awarded the Order of the British Empire for services to business and the economy and continues to be committed to supporting the regeneration of Hull and the wider region. He was a member of the Hull City Leadership Board, which is driving forward the City Plan to transform Hull’s economic fortunes and is currently a trustee of the Hull Maritime Foundation.

Charlie is the Chair of Governors for the pioneering Ron Dearing University Technical College Governing Board, of which Spencer Group are a founding partner. This plays a key role in creating a workforce with the skills to maximise the region’s exciting growth opportunities.

In 2018, Charlie became a Fellow of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
