Paul Biggin

Managing Director - Layer8 IT

Paul Biggin is Managing Director of Layer8 IT, a Hull-based technology business built around a simple belief: technology should work for people, not the other way around.

Paul's interest in technology started long before it became his career. Growing up, he was always interested in the latest gadgets and phones and would build and work on computers simply because he enjoyed understanding how they worked.

After graduating from university, Paul joined Spencer Group in 2013 as an IT Support Technician. Over the following 13 years, he progressed through a number of technical and leadership roles, becoming IT Field Technician, IT Support Supervisor, IT Services Manager and ultimately Head of IT.

That progression gave Paul experience across virtually every level of an IT operation – from resolving problems first-hand and supporting users through to building teams, developing technology strategy and taking responsibility for the systems and cybersecurity supporting a complex engineering group.

In 2025, Paul was given the opportunity to lead the next stage of that journey: transforming Spencer Group's established internal IT capability into Layer8 IT, a standalone commercial technology business.

Today, as Managing Director, Paul is focused on growing Layer8 while retaining the qualities that made its internal IT model successful. His philosophy is deliberately human first – get to know the people you're supporting, understand what the business is trying to achieve, communicate clearly and take ownership rather than simply closing tickets.

Layer8 describes this approach as being a Technology Success Partner. The team provides managed IT support, cybersecurity, networking and infrastructure, Microsoft 365 and other technology services, but Paul's ambition is for Layer8 to go further than traditional IT support – helping clients understand how technology, automation and AI can make their businesses more secure, efficient and successful.

Paul's own experience of progressing from a hands-on technical role into leadership and now running and growing a commercial business means he is particularly interested in technology strategy, cybersecurity, developing people, service improvement and the challenges that come with building a business.

As a member of FEO, Paul is keen to learn from entrepreneurs who have been through that journey before, while sharing his own experience in technology and helping other local businesses make better use of it.
