Joseph Richardson

Joseph Richardson is Managing Director of Jos. Richardson & Son Ltd, a family business that can trace its origins back to 1892. The first three generations were primarily focused on the wholesale and retail coal business.

Joseph joined the family business in 2004 after a five-year stint in the corporate world. At that time, the business was located on a single site at Glews Garage in Goole and operated two car dealerships and one petrol station. Joseph was made Managing Director in 2013.

Over the last eighteen years the business has concentrated on adding more petrol stations and redeveloping them into modern service areas focused on fuel, convenience, food to go and valeting. They now have eleven sites across East, North and West Yorkshire.

In 2016 the site at Glews was redeveloped, which included the construction of a new roundabout to allow for the new Truckstop. In 2019 the family exited Dealership operations entirely after over 40 years in the business. in 2022 the business secured planning for 80,000 square feet on industrial business park.

Joseph sees himself as someone who has considerable skills in allocating resources efficiently and effectively to solve problems and create new opportunities. He has also built a fantastic team of over two hundred dedicated employees and passionately believes in flat management structures and empowerment to give people a sense of achievement through enhancing responsibility and accountability. This allows for a genuine culture of team work to be embedded which allows a company to grow.

Joseph is the only surviving ‘Richardson’ involved in the business having bought out remaining family members in 2021. He has gained considerable experience in the high and lows of being involved in running family business which can involve emotions not normally associated with business.

Outside of work Joseph spends a lot of time with his wife and three boys, and his hobbies are cricket, golf, guitar and history books!
